The fact that we have a kinda regular cast member in Disney parodies (ok, only Carpi ones, but even Bum Bum is a strictly Mastantuono character, these things happen) who hasn't an alter ego in the "real" world, baffles me.

No offense, but I think this here is an example of Mickey Mouse as a character, a little bit annoying but not one dimensional, in a Michael Strogoff retelling dating back to the (Italian) 60s. There's something to say about Donald Duck being more popular, but on the whole I'd say that this feat has been possible this whole time? I'm biased, though
To be honest I always felt like one of the biggest tragedies that happened to Mickey Mouse is how he tends to be treated less of a character and more of a mascot for Disney.
And to be honest, Disney really is to blame here. I can't really blame people for seeing Mickey as a shallow boring mascot when their only exposure to him is him smiling on a t-shirt or coffee mug or maybe seeing an extremely sanitized version on a pre-school cartoon.
As someone who loves cartoon characters, I like to see them get to be themselves. And while a lot of other cartoons fade into obscurity, Mickey has a unique fate where he is still here but him as a character tends to fade instead. We were lucky to get the Rudish cartoons which helped breath life into him and really show that he can be a fun character even if it is a more exaggerated version of him. But it seems like that era is starting to end and I am not sure what will come afterwards.
And with earlier versions of him going into Public Domain soon, I know that we are going to see quite a few takes of him. I know many of those takes are coming from people who see Mickey as a stand in for all of the bad things Disney do and will probably portray him as an evil capitalist or some kind of monster. Which is whatever, I'm not going to be upset about people making their own art on their own feelings (though personally I think the joke got old after everyone tried to copy South Park and Simpsons for the millionth time in a row).
But I also feel like this is a chance to reclaim Mickey as return him as a character. Let him get to be a character with flaws and goals and not just a smiling face on merchandise. It would be nice to get some official Disney projects too. But if Disney won't, we can do it ourselves.

Okinawa by Susumu Higa A peaceful, independent kingdom until its annexation by the Japanese Empire in the 19th century, Okinawa was the site of the most destructive land battle of the Pacific War. Today, the archipelago is Japan’s poorest prefecture and unwilling host to 75% of all US military bases in Japan. Okinawa is a harrowing document of war, but it is also a work which addresses the…

I only glimpsed at the new Sandopaper story (that, according to Sisti, is supposed to be a sort of soft reboot), but what struck me the most is Freccero's work. The secondary characters/extras are very much "Freccerian", but the ducks are practically taken from a Carpi skecthbook. The care to mimic Carpi's style (by one of his most egregious alumnus) is really over the top.
(even in the cover this is noticeable, but in the story it's crystal clear)
(and even the colors are reminiscent of that era of Topolino)

Spoon's Rabelais Collection (so far...)
so yeah I first bought the superb Penguin Classics edition of Gargantua and Pantagruel with the very enjoyable translation by M. A . Screech (it's such a breeze) and it... really made me wanna look into other books and adaptations, especially illustrated editions because I like looking at nice pictures, so I'd look into listings on Ebay...
Giovan Battista Carpi: Gargantua da Rabelais
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gargantua's story freely adapted by Carpi, whose work I know best from Disney comics (especially the Topolino pocket books), but he's worked on some original creations as well. Gargantua irst published in Smack! magazine in 1979 and remained in an unfinished state and later picked up later by the Piú magazine to continue and conclude the story in 1983: this album was published in 1995. There's definitely a feeling that things got a little truncated but besides that, it's a perfectly serviceable little tale, some parts are more faithful than others, but since it's a comic intended for kids, don't expect a slavishly faithful depictions of violence or scatological humour (in that there's zero, only really cartoony mischief and slapstick level of violence lol)
I love it and Gargantua is very cute. Please read it. either in Italian or the English scanlation.
Rabelais Tome 1 and 2, illustrated by Albert Dubout

came upon these positively massive tomes by chance and I was just charmed by Dubout's humorous artwork. many of them are quite bawdy, and looking into his other ouvre, I can see why! it fits with the books themes so well, too.
the print quality is superb.

I absolutely adore the loose inkwork here. it's so full of character and once again, the characters look just delightful. Panurge has to be the highlight, he definitely becomes the central character in book 3 onwards, so it fits that he gets drawn more.

I love many artists' takes on our Ducks, in no particular order:
US artists: Carl Barks, Don Rosa, and Al Taliaferro
Italian artists: Romano Scarpa, Giorgio Cavazzano, Giovan Battista Carpi, and Marco Rota
Yes, I'm old. Those are the artists that defined the Ducks for me when I was a kid (well, not Don Rosa. He came later). And let's not forget more recent Topolino artists who are doing a stuoendous job: Paolo Mottura, Andrea Freccero, Marco Gervasio, Fabio Celoni,...
Taliaferro:

Carpi:

Rota:

My personal favorites are Don Rosa and Mau Heymans (🇳🇱!!)
